How Many Manufacturing Companies Are There in the UK? (2026 Guide)

The ONS counts 138,440 registered UK manufacturers; wider estimates reach 250,000+. What each number counts, and how to turn it into a list you can call.

You sell to factories in the UK: raw materials, machine parts, packaging, logistics, maintenance, industrial software or recruitment. Before you plan a campaign or a territory, you want to know how many manufacturers there are, and how many of them you can actually reach by phone or email.

The short answer: the ONS counts 138,440 manufacturing businesses registered for VAT or PAYE in the UK (115,665 of them incorporated companies, March 2022). Wider estimates that also include small unregistered businesses put the total at 250,000 to 269,000. The Bot Harbour UK Industrial & Manufacturing database gives you 22,000 of them with a phone number and full address in one Excel-ready file.

Who is this guide for?

It is for a sales or business development manager at a UK supplier who needs a list of manufacturers to call this month, and for overseas exporters (for example in the Gulf or Turkey) who want UK factories as buyers or partners. If you are sizing a market for a business plan, the official counts below are enough. If you need names and phone numbers, read on.

Why do the numbers differ so much?

Each source counts something different, so pick the one that matches your question.

  • Registered businesses (138,440): the ONS register only holds businesses that pay VAT or run a payroll. This is the best count of manufacturers big enough to buy from a B2B supplier.

  • All businesses (250,000 to 269,000): industry bodies and the government's business population estimates add sole traders and micro firms below the VAT threshold. Many of these are one-person workshops.

  • Companies House: it lists every registered company, including dormant ones and holding companies, so a count by manufacturing SIC code (divisions 10 to 33) is higher than the number of working factories.

The ONS does not publish names: its register is confidential by law. So the official counts tell you the size of the market, but not who to call.

What do you actually need in a UK manufacturer list?

A usable list for outreach has these columns:

  • Company name and a website you can open.

  • A sub-category you can filter (metalwork, plastics and rubber, chemicals, steel fabrication, machine shops).

  • A landline phone number. In the Bot Harbour sample, 47 of 50 numbers are geographic 01, 02 or 03 numbers, which usually means a site with a reception.

  • A full address with postcode and region, so you can split the list by sales territory.

  • Email where the company publishes one. Expect around half, not all.

A bad file has no sub-category, mixes manufacturers with retailers and consultants, gives only a city instead of a postcode, or lists personal mobile numbers and Gmail addresses as the main contact.

How do you get a list of UK manufacturers?

  1. Size the market with the ONS counts above, or with the ONS Nomis tool for your region and industry.

  2. Free route: use the Companies House advanced search, filter by SIC code (for example 25110 for metal structures) and status "active". You get names and registered offices, but no phone numbers or emails, and many registered offices are an accountant's address.

  3. Ready route: download the free sample of the UK Industrial & Manufacturing companies database (22,000 companies with phone, address, region and sub-category). Filter the sub-category column to your niche and sort by region.

  4. Wider route: if you also sell to distributors and wholesalers, the UK suppliers, distributors and manufacturers database covers 165,000 businesses.

  5. Custom route: if you need one niche only, for example galvanisers in the Midlands, ask Bot Harbour for a custom extract.

How do you check a manufacturer list before you pay?

  1. Open ten rows. Check that each company really makes something. A list that is half shops and consultants will waste your callers' time.

  2. Click the website column. In our own sample, 11 of 50 rows link to a directory listing page rather than the company's own site. That is fine for finding the phone number, but plan a step to add the company domain before an email campaign.

  3. Call three numbers. A landline answered with the company name is the best quality signal you can get in five minutes.

What should you do next?

  1. Import the file into your CRM with sub-category, region and postcode as fields.

  2. Pick one sub-category and one region (for example plastics in the West Midlands), and call 20 companies this week.

  3. Ask for the buyer or the production manager, and note the name in the CRM.

  4. Follow up by email to the company address. Under PECR, marketing email to a company address is allowed without prior consent, but you must identify yourself and offer an opt-out.

  5. Add a LinkedIn connection for the 8 in 50 companies that publish a LinkedIn page, and track replies by sub-category to see where your offer lands.
